The newly launched device from Xiaomi, Mi A1, needs no introduction now. With amazing specs and the latest software from Google, this device is ready to shine out and fascinate Mi fans. One of the significant feature of this device is the dual camera which takes can make every shot of yours picture perfect. In this thread, we will discuss how the dual camera setup works on Mi A1.
Firstly, let’s discuss the basics. The dual camera setup for smartphones available today in the  market will essentially fall under three categories:

i) Color + Color combination: This is was first introduced in 2014 and is currently used in some phones e.g. Lenovo K8 note.
ii) Color + Monochrome combination: Used by phone such as Moto G5s
iii) Wide angle + Telephoto combination: Used by Mi A1
The telephoto lens is responsible for zooming in and gives a close-up shot while the wide angle lens captures a wide panoramic shot.

The Mi A1 flagship dual camera setup uses a 12 megapixel 50 mm telephoto lens and a 12 megapixel 26 mm wide-angle lens which delivers a remarkable DSLR experience to your pockets. It has large 1.25μm pixels that let in at least 56% more light than typical sensors. This lens setup is about 41% more expensive than the other two combinations discussed above and the lens setup on Mi A1 is similar to iPhone 7 Plus.

Talking more about digital photography, the size of the pixels is very important. Mi A1 packs 1.25 um large pixels which take up 56% more light, resulting in clearer and brighter images. As for an example, check out the picture below captured using Mi A1. The image is precisely focused and is vibrant. The background is beautifully blurred, giving it a DSLR like effect. All you need to do is just take pictures using portrait mode and it helps you capture like a pro.

The 50 mm telephoto lens captures the main object and 26 mm wide angle lens assists depth of field measurement. The stereoscopic imaging and deep learning algorithm then process the individual images and produces a bokeh effect that is a  DSLR like in nature.

To understand more about Mi A1 camera have a look at the comparison shots - iPhone 7 Plus, One Plus 5 and Mi A1. The bokeh lights produced by the Mi A1 camera beautifully blend and make the photos look more vivid. Moreover, if we take a closer look at the right sleeve, then we can make out that the edges of the sleeve are clearly defined by Mi A1 by those shot by the other two devices have some blurring and the edges don’t come up sharp and distinct.

In another comparison shot, Mi A1’s camera produces clearly defined edges, including the hair while the other devices miss out the details regarding sharp edges around the hair of this lady.

Regarding color reproduction, we have another image here for comparison. Clearly, Mi A1’s camera is superior to the other two phones if we talk about the color details.

The camera app incorporates Beautify 3.0 which makes the shots picture perfect. This feature includes smart beautify which identifies hundreds of points on the face which helps to set an accurate skin color and tones up the face to maintain genuine facial features.

Moreover, it also comes with a natural color correction, which works across a range of skin tones which gives a natural and healthy glow to the skin making portrait images speak!

The Mi A1 camera not only takes amazing portraits, but also helps you to capture close up shots using the 2X optical zoom feature. Now here’s the catch. The 2X optical zoom is different from the 2X digital zoom. The optical zoom helps to capture lossless quality images in contrast to digital zoom, which magnifies pixels thereby compromising with image quality.

All in all, the picture perfect dual camera phone - Mi A1 takes mobile photography to a next level. Here are some more sample portrait and landscape images:
