WHAT IS LATENCY ? HOW DOES IT SLOWS YOUR PC?


Everyone who wants to own  a laptop has one question running in their mind i.e., Do i need to spend  more bucks on more  ram for fast performance ?

Not really ..!! yes more ram means good but that doesn't make one's laptop faster there are some other factors that constitute for fast performance those are Latency and Frequency .

In a laptop for an average user to cope up his daily stream of work like browsing , videos , editing 8GB of RAM is more than enough anything more than that is waste of money if you don't run full sized adobe softwares which are RAM thirsty ,but instead of putting money on RAM you could take glance on laptops which have less Latency and more Frequency.

Before going for these two concepts we need to know how instructions are executed in computer .
When a user enters a command its gets processed , analyzed and then executed all of this takes place in a split second and there are lots of instructions that takes place in that one split second and they all need memory to execute this where we encounter Latency and frequency.

Frequency is the number of cycles per second ram can do or generally referred to as clockspeed of laptop generally it varies between different processors for e.g.  i3 , i5 , i7 from Intel .

More Frequency means more fastly  instructions can be executed by system which are given by the user . For a laptop with i3 processor and a clockspeed of 2 GHz  and another one with i5 processor and with 1.7GHz clockspeed ,here i3 gives good performance than i5 . So , for a computer need to work faster it needs to have  more clock speed .

Latency is the amount of time a message takes to traverse a system. In a computer network, it is an expression of how much time it takes for a packet  of data to get  from one designated point to another. It is sometimes measured as the time required for a packet to be returned to its sender. It is commonly known as CAS Latency .
For a system  Ram depends on cas i.e., the number of clock cycles CPU send to RAM and if there is a delay in number of clock cycles and thus executing instructions slowly and making system slower. It generally makes the response time of CPU slower .

CAS Latency is calculated :

  There can be two cases where a laptop can have more less frequency and more latency then response time for an instruction is :

for example , frequency = 1000MHz
                     time    =   1ns
                  If  cl = 10(latency) response time
                 => 1ns*10 = 10ns

The other case is where frequency is more but the latency is less:

   for example , frequency = 2000MHz
                     time    =   0.5ns
                  If  cl = 20(latency) response time
                 => 0.5ns*20 = 10ns



In the table there are different ranges of values of calculated Latency with frequency ang RAM values .
RAM is generally know as DDR SDRAM means Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory , The Double Data Rate is self-explanatory it just means that the RAM transfers twice as much data as the SDR (single data rate) SDRAM does. DDR RAM (Double Data Rate) which means it can transfer double the data without increasing the clock speed. Typical clock speeds were 100Mhz, 133Mhz, 166Mhz and 200MHz.
   It means RAM has been developed to transfer data more over same frequency utilization overtime and versions of RAM like DDR2 ,DDR3 ,DDR4 came with faster data rates.

So, it could be both ways in order for efficiency latency must be lower so that more instructions can be executed in less time and more frequency is better .
